What is a Hoodectomy?

A hoodectomy or clitoral hood reduction is a procedure that is most commonly performed alongside a labiaplasty, to help reduce excess folds in the clitoral hood, or prepuce. An intricate procedure, MAS patients can take advantage of receiving their treatment in a calming environment and surround by fully-qualified, reassuring health professionals.

The need for a hoodectomy occurs when excess folds in the skin surrounding the clitoris create a bulge. This can be further exaggerated after the labia minora has been reduced during a labiaplasty surgery. By undergoing a clitoral hood reduction as well we can help to create a balance and a more symmetrical look to improve the appearance of your genitalia.

What is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty surgeries are often performed to reduce the size of the labia minora – the flaps of skin which cover either side of the vaginal opening. There can be a number of reasons why you may wish to investigate if a labiaplasty is right for you.

You may be unhappy with the look of your labia, or it may be causing you pain and discomfort due to chafing caused by the excess skin. It is essential to talk through all of your options with your gynaecologist to ensure the surgery is right for you. Hoodectomy and Labiaplasty FAQs

Labiaplasty, which takes between one and two hours to complete depending on the individual receiving the treatment, reduces and reshapes the labia minora. They are the inner lips on each side of the vagina and the reduction is achieved through surgical sculpting. A Hoodectomy, which is roughly a half an hour procedure, is normally performed as well as labiaplasty, to help reduce excess folds in the clitoral hood.

Labiaplasty works by trimming the labia edges to create a neater, tidier appearance. A Hoodectomy reduces the hood size through minor clipping or incisions to improve the general aesthetic appearance of the vagina and also to prevent any rubbing or chafing which had previously been occurring. Each procedure is performed under anaesthetic, so the patient will feel no pain whatsoever.

There are various benefits to Labiaplasty ranging from a reduction in pain and discomfort to an improvement in the symmetry of the labia. A reduction in the chance of bacteria to harbour in the excess folds is also provided by this surgery. For a Hoodectomy, the main benefits are the improved appearance of the clitoral hood and the reduced swelling caused by the skin folds rubbing against your clothes. From both surgeries, women can occasionally benefit from enhanced sexual functionality.

Usually, for both procedures, any swelling or minor post-surgery pain should subside within a few days. However, you may need to have a couple of days off work immediately after surgery if you are in a large amount of discomfort. Roughly a month to six weeks after patients undergo surgery, they can expect to comfortably return to their normal day to day lives. This includes things such as visiting the gym or general sexual activity.

Suitability for both Labiaplasty and a Hoodectomy can be determined through a consultation at MAS Gynaecology.
