Hymenoplasty – also known as hymen repair – is the name for a type of cosmetic gynaecology surgery which reconstructs the hymen after it has been torn.

The hymen is a thick membrane which encircles the vaginal orifice from the urethral orifice dorsally and allows the escape of menstrual blood. Some hymens are extremely elastic but for most women they hymen is usually torn during intercourse, via the insertion of tampons or during participation in some exercises or sports such as gymnastics, cycling or horse riding.

Hymenoplasty or hymen repairs are a common and simple cosmetic gynaecology procedure and should never be something to be afraid or embarrassed by – many women undertake this treatment.

Depending on your specific circumstances, such a procedure may be achieved by suturing the edges of the hymen, promoting healing and restoring of the hymen, or, where this is not possible, it may be achieved by creating a new hymen from the lip of the vagina.

Hymen repair is usually performed with the patients under a local anaesthetic. General anaesthetic can also be used depending on the patient’s individual preferences. This surgery is completed in less than a day.

Depending on the severity of the tear, we can stitch the torn tissue edges to encourage them to heal naturally. However, if the area is completely torn, the torn tissues will be removed before a new hymen is made from the tissue in the lip of the vagina. Thanks to Hymenoplasty this will imitate the original, unbroken hymen. Small dissolvable stitches are used.
